On March 1, 2020 Archbishop of Detroit Allen Vigneron announced that Pope Francis named Ste. Anne Church a minor basilica. The title is given to churches around the world to denote a particular importance in liturgical and pastoral life and a closer relationship with the pope. Ste. Anne is now one of 94 churches in the United States —and only the third church in Michigan —to hold the title of Minor Basilica.
Our current structure was built in 1886. Its soaring neo-Gothic architecture, incredible stained glass windows, impressive side altars and statues, and dazzling starred ceiling make it an important landmark in the City of Detroit.
The Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit is the site of the official Shrine to Ste. Anne in the Archdiocese of Detroit. (Ste. Anne is the patron saint of the Archdiocese.) The basilica is also the final resting place of Fr. Gabriel Richard, who was in important figure in the history of our state as a religious leader, civic activist and co-founder of the University of Michigan.
Like the rest of downtown Detroit, the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit is experiencing a reawakening. We have expanded our tours, renovated our gift shop and hosted lots of fun, social events. Please note that the basilica is not open to walk-in visitors. Please join us for Mass on Sunday or call ahead to schedule a visit. Please note that the church is not open when Mass is in the chapel.
